Plain Values magazine (available in print

for those of us who love paper in hand while reading) delivers some good wisdom on balancing humility with the pride of self sufficiency. We need community ya’ll. God designed us to need one another…. and resisting community affects mental health. (You can see the evidence of this by the escalation of mental health issues following lockdowns. ).

Homesteading is very rewarding especially when you find your community. Many hands make for lighter work! Some of the most beautiful memories I have when we first began homesteading in 1995 are the occasions friends and family came out to help us with some really big projects. It was humbling to be on the receiving end…. something Charlie and I are not used to.

If you would have told me we’d fall in love with a ‘possum a year ago, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have believed you.

Yet here we are….. celebrating one of the most maligned creatures God ever made!

They truly are amazing little mammals!

As dry as it’s been, the drought conditions here have not had an effect on the flying pest population. The vinegar trick is amazing. It works! I’m going to try these other traps too. What have you found that works well for you… getting rid of pests in a healthy manner?

Good word this morning. Remember, the government is supposed to be working for us, not the other way around.

Their “people’s garden” program is NOT your grandma’s victory garden brochure. It is—in their own words—creating a registry and map of small-scale food production.

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES REGISTER YOUR GARDEN. No matter what benefits or enticements are offered.

“The USDA expanding its People’s Garden Initiative to include eligible gardens nationwide!

“School gardens, community gardens, urban farms, and small-scale agriculture projects in rural, suburban and urban areas can be recognized as a “People’s Garden” if they register on the USDA website and meet criteria including benefiting the community, working collaboratively, incorporating conservation practices and educating the public. Affiliate People’s Garden locations will be indicated on a map on the USDA website, featured in USDA communications, and provided with a People’s Garden sign.

First they want you to register your garden!! Next they will start a farmer census for your harvests all in promise to track some #tomatoflu or some other BS outbreak by assuring you they’re the ones keeping you “safe” and then they will enforce a taxation for the volume food you grew for yourself.

Happiest of birthdays to my best friend, my love, my life partner! 60 is a big number and it looks good on you. For many people, they see 60 as a negative place to be….. God is truly refining you in your years, and I’m thankful you have chosen to lean into His refining process and you look forward to what’s to come instead of backwards at what was. With age, comes wisdom, and wisdom trumps youth any day! You’re gonna rock the next era of life, and I’m looking forward to it with you!

If you know Charlie, you know he is a good man with a heart the size of Texas, a love of Jesus, an encourager extraordinaire, a guy’s guy, a lover of people, and holds a work ethic that just doesn’t quit. What’s a great memory you have of him?
