Interesting Study on the Influence of the Father’s Diet

Liz James · July 25, 2024 ·

Such an interesting article! We (hopefully) tend to be cognizant of a mama’s health impacting a fetus/baby’s health and future health, but rarely do we think about what impact a man’s health has on the contribution of a child’s health outcome beyond uncommon genetic anomalies.
” A study found that after a 12-week high-fat diet [from ultra-processed foods], father rats had newborn daughters with approximately 30 percent reduced pancreatic beta-cell mass. Beta cells are crucial, as they produce insulin. “
We are largely what we eat…. and so are our babies! Nutrition is key to health (as is exposure to chronic …. even “low grade” chronic toxicity). Do not underestimate the impact your environment has on health outcomes.

Got Acne? Don’t Get Cancer too!

Liz James · March 10, 2024 ·

Oooh boy.🙄 Here we go again. I can’t count the number of times I used prescription and OTC products containing benzoyl peroxide (BPO) growing up in the 1980’s. Thankfully, I only had a spotty acne history (ha! accidental pun there 😁), but I had lots of friends and family members who relied on benzoyl peroxide to treat some pretty hardcore acne. Now, we find out that BPO can pretty easily turn into the carcinogen benzene under the right conditions (for example: BPO product sits in a hot🔥☀️ transport ✈️🚢🚂 container or a backpack or bag in a☀️🔥 hot car and things go south ☠️ pretty quick).
I’ve talked to numerous people over the years who have discovered (just like I have) that perhaps our society’s propensity for skin cancer doesn’t lie in being in the sun a lot…. rather it lies in the toxins we put in our body and on our body. Clean up the toxin load, and interesting changes occur. I’m a blue-eyed blonde. I can be out in the sun all day and will not get burned… often not even get pink. That didn’t used to be the case. I used to get sunburned at least a few times a year in my much younger years. What changed? 🤔
The last 23 years of learning what toxins do to a body, and making some educated changes!
I wouldn’t be surprised if someone were to dig deeper, that this new BPO information wasn’t so new after all. “They” are quite good at hiding information for the sake of the $$.
If you’ve got kiddos in the acne era of their lives, avoid the benzoyl peroxide acne formulations. Young Living has a stellar acne spot treatment that zaps zits like a champ. No BPO…. just clean ingredients! Pair it up with the charcoal bar soap (or the mask you might have gotten as an order freebie a few months ago!), and you’ve got your dream team for your favorite teen (or maybe yourself….. tho if you have an adult acne, we should chat because root cause varies, and the skin is just a mirror to what is really going on inside. )

Pregnancy Hormones and Depression

Liz James · September 11, 2023 ·

prenatal antidepressant exposure
There’s a time and a place for Western medicine, and with that, it should always be accompanied by risk vs. benefit and informed consent.

Pregnancy is one time in a woman’s life when hormones (including the thyroid) and life in general have the potential to go wacko. I’ve seen waaaaaaay too many women prescribed antidepressants while pregnant while being assured that it’s “safe” for their baby. In the same appointment, not giving the mama the space/time to talk out the reasons they may be experiencing some anxiety or moody blues, or the extensive labwork to confirm that there isn’t a nutrient or transient hormone imbalance, etc. I’ll also add that it is just not common for a western medicine oriented practitioner to give a mama some healthy options for improving mood/mindset during pregnancy (instead of meds).

For the last year, so much has been finally revealed about SSRIs (cliff notes version: They do not do what the drug manufacturers have stated that they do in the way they’ve been stated that they do it🧐).
You may recognize SSRIs by name: Lexapro (escitalopram), Zoloft (sertraline), Prozac (fluoxetine), Paxil (paroxetine), Celexa (citalopram), etc. They are among the most prescribed medications in the USA.
Back to the question. Are taking SSRIs during pregnancy worth it? Informed consent is where this is at….. Would you…. if you knew that prenatal SSRI exposure had an effect on fetal brain development, particularly in brain regions critical to emotional processing, and may be associated with future susceptibility to anxiety disorders, hyperactivity, and maladaptive processing skills? (You can read more about one of these studies here: https://jamanetwork.com/…/jama…/article-abstract/2676821 )

Another representative (there are many) study, (found here: https://jamanetwork.com/…/jama…/article-abstract/2808722 ), has found that antidepressant use in pregnancy is associated with neonatal withdrawal syndrome, preterm birth, congenital disabilities, developmental problems, cardiopulmonary problems, and even death.

How might each of these outcomes have been more likely avoided, had a healthcare professional, listened and gotten a mama plugged into a support community or counseling professional who could have helped her alleviate some of the stressors common in today’s world (and exacerbated by pregnancy)….or run labs and identified a deficiency root cause and addressed that with nutrition and supplementation instead….. or given her coping strategies such as yoga for pregnancy, true nutritional counseling, exercises, calming (and safe!) herbal teas and other non harmful herbal🌿 based strategies. ( If you’ve been around the “alternative mindset/ holistically minded community, you know exactly what you’d reach for 😉. And if you haven’t, it’s time to find your tribe who can help you. It’s not healthy living on an island alone.) ?….. instead of prescribing an SSRI💊.

If you have a helpful healthy tip for an expecting mama, show them some community love, and drop it here.
Mindful Monday friends. Have a great one 😘 xoxo~ liz

How to Keep Kids Healthy

Liz James · March 22, 2023 ·

I’m really not a fan of the American Academy of Pediatrics recent release on their guidelines for childhood obesity. It’s a problem for a number of reasons, not the least of which is:
📛Their focus is on treatment, not prevention
📛Wegovy and more (ugh!!!)
📛Bariatric surgery for teens that fall into the BMI bracket (double ugh, with a nooooooooo!)
Whole food nutrition, exercise, healthy emotions, and adequate hydration is the answer in nearly all instances (barring a primary health problem that is causing the weight gain).
Kids are our leaders and our future. We need them healthy in body, spirit, and mind!

Why I Choose Natural Healing: The Pharmaceutical Fallout You’re Not Being Told About

Liz James · February 3, 2023 ·

Infographic titled 'Activities that support serotonin naturally' with a lightbulb icon. Lists 11 activities: eat tryptophan-rich foods like turkey and salmon; aerobic exercise; spend more time in sunshine; eat probiotic-rich foods such as yogurt, sauerkraut, or kefir, or take multi-strain probiotics like Young Living's Life 9 or MightyPro for kids; schedule regular massages; practice yoga, mindfulness, or prayer; learn breathing exercises such as box breathing and alternate nostril breathing; volunteer, practice gratitude, and laugh often; aromatherapy with pure essential oils including frankincense, ylang ylang, and citrus oils; prioritize sleep hygiene and get 7-8 hours per night; and socialize even if you don't feel like it.
One of the (MANY) reasons I’m so passionate about finding alternative / natural healing methods is because of the fallout that always occurs to some degree within every single person who steps into chronic pharmaceutical use.

Sometimes the fallout is slow🐢. Sometimes it happens quickly🐇. When it happens slowly, it’s rare that the particular medication gets appropriately blamed. Such is the case with antidepressants (and hundreds of other medications) contributing to the surge in antibiotic resistant bacteria in our culture.

The consequences: antibiotics may not work as well as they should when they are used, which leads to hard to treat/ difficult to overcome infections. An estimated 35,000 deaths a year in the USA are attributed to antimicrobial resistant infections. I wonder how many of those who have died were taking medication(s) which promoted antibiotic resistance 🤔?

Interesting article: 👉How Antidepressants Help Bacteria Resist Antibiotics https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-023-00186-y.

I’m not suggesting anyone get off their medication. Have that conversation with a health provider who is not completely influenced by Big Pharma. And in the meantime, utilize natural ways to heal and support your body in a manner that doesn’t require pharmaceuticals. 😘

xoxo~ liz
