There’s a time and a place for Western medicine, and with that, it should always be accompanied by risk vs. benefit and informed consent.
Pregnancy is one time in a woman’s life when hormones (including the thyroid) and life in general have the potential to go wacko. I’ve seen waaaaaaay too many women prescribed antidepressants while pregnant while being assured that it’s “safe” for their baby. In the same appointment, not giving the mama the space/time to talk out the reasons they may be experiencing some anxiety or moody blues, or the extensive labwork to confirm that there isn’t a nutrient or transient hormone imbalance, etc. I’ll also add that it is just not common for a western medicine oriented practitioner to give a mama some healthy options for improving mood/mindset during pregnancy (instead of meds).
For the last year, so much has been finally revealed about SSRIs (cliff notes version: They do not do what the drug manufacturers have stated that they do in the way they’ve been stated that they do it).
You may recognize SSRIs by name: Lexapro (escitalopram), Zoloft (sertraline), Prozac (fluoxetine), Paxil (paroxetine), Celexa (citalopram), etc. They are among the most prescribed medications in the USA.
Back to the question. Are taking SSRIs during pregnancy worth it? Informed consent is where this is at….. Would you…. if you knew that prenatal SSRI exposure had an effect on fetal brain development, particularly in brain regions critical to emotional processing, and may be associated with future susceptibility to anxiety disorders, hyperactivity, and maladaptive processing skills? (You can read more about one of these studies here: https://jamanetwork.com/…/jama…/article-abstract/2676821 )
Another representative (there are many) study, (found here: https://jamanetwork.com/…/jama…/article-abstract/2808722 ), has found that antidepressant use in pregnancy is associated with neonatal withdrawal syndrome, preterm birth, congenital disabilities, developmental problems, cardiopulmonary problems, and even death.
How might each of these outcomes have been more likely avoided, had a healthcare professional, listened and gotten a mama plugged into a support community or counseling professional who could have helped her alleviate some of the stressors common in today’s world (and exacerbated by pregnancy)….or run labs and identified a deficiency root cause and addressed that with nutrition and supplementation instead….. or given her coping strategies such as yoga for pregnancy, true nutritional counseling, exercises, calming (and safe!) herbal teas and other non harmful herbal based strategies. ( If you’ve been around the “alternative mindset/ holistically minded community, you know exactly what you’d reach for . And if you haven’t, it’s time to find your tribe who can help you. It’s not healthy living on an island alone.) ?….. instead of prescribing an SSRI.
If you have a helpful healthy tip for an expecting mama, show them some community love, and drop it here.
Mindful Monday friends. Have a great one xoxo~ liz
Texans for Vaccine Choice (TFVC) has a great newsletter for those who wish to learn and stay informed and involved. Vaccines are a choice, friends. That’s why informed consent is so important. Do your research and then make a choice.
Today’s wall of shame contender is sadly my growing-up hometown: Lufkin, Texas.
What makes the Lufkin ISD eligible for the Hall of Shame? I’m glad you asked!
Lufkin ISD makes it appear that in order for a child to attend school, they must have an “up-to-date immunization record with a current TB test result”. This is patently not true according to Texas Law.
Texas has no requirement for a TB test in order to enroll in public schools.
Exemptions are definitely possible. Your child does not have to be fully vaccinated (or vaccinated at all) in order to attend school in the state of Texas. Texas public schools, including charter schools, are required to accept the exemption form.
You can learn more about exemptions here: (Thank you TFVC!) https://texansforvaccinechoice.com/exemptions/
If you aren’t sure about vaccines, do your research.
If you trust the vaccine schedule because your doctor or school said so, as it stands….. do your research.
If you think vaccines are safe and effective….. do your research.
If you don’t know where to start researching, I’m happy to help. There are lots of resources out there once you know where to look.
My goddaughter Jordan…… she nailed it. Be the example for your kids. Train them up in the way they should go. Do it for them!
I’m really not a fan of the American Academy of Pediatrics recent release on their guidelines for childhood obesity. It’s a problem for a number of reasons, not the least of which is:
Their focus is on treatment, not prevention
Wegovy and more (ugh!!!)
Bariatric surgery for teens that fall into the BMI bracket (double ugh, with a nooooooooo!)
Whole food nutrition, exercise, healthy emotions, and adequate hydration is the answer in nearly all instances (barring a primary health problem that is causing the weight gain).
Kids are our leaders and our future. We need them healthy in body, spirit, and mind!
(PS: The next round of 14 Day Reset begins April 10th. Message me if you’d like to hop in and join us… the information is free…. the ticket is NingXia Red (ticket: https://bit.ly/14-Day-Reset ) as it’s a key piece of the 14 Day Reset Puzzle! The level of education and community there is !)
The initial study was published in 2011, and mainstream media (largely controlled by big pharma) gave it little attention, other than the critics who said the study excluded data which altered the results.
So, as conscientious scientists, they performed the study a second time… this time including the data the critics had said altered the results.
The conclusion: affirmation that the 1st study in 2011 remains correct.
Result: There is a high correlation between infant mortality rate and the number of vaccines a baby receives.
In digging further, the researchers found (within VAERS data collected 1990-2019) that when sudden infant death occurred, 58% of the time, it was 3 days post vaccination, and 78% of the time, it occurred 7 days post vaccination.
Once a vaccine is on the CDC childhood schedule, the drug company no longer carries liability thanks to a 1986 law.
A mama’s intuition, when paired with research is priceless. I’ll post links in the comments.
