Finding Answers to your own Health Problems

Liz James · December 28, 2020 ·

Last week, I wrote about all the fascinating information you may learn from looking at the clues embedded (literally) in the nether regions of fingernails. You can find that post here if you need to catch up: https://goodmedicine.info/blog/health-clues-you-can-use-1

A clue means next to nothing if it is singular….. You’ll  need at least a few clues if you are to be sure you are headed down the right path.

Since we are only in the embryonic stages of becoming your own health detective, here are a few quick self assessment tools every good health detective needs:
*Honesty: If you are to be your own health detective, it’s important to acknowledge lifestyle choices and known consequences. The “it won’t happen to me” mindset will never work….nor will the hypochondriac’s lament. If you are going to do the detective work, be honest with yourself……using your clues to improve your wellness quotient thru diet, lifestyle changes and using supplements (and/or YL essential oils) when you suspect support is needed will go a long way to turning back the physiological clock.

*Labwork: Every adult should have bloodwork  done annually (more often if there is a visible problem). Even the uninsured or “undoctored” can get bloodwork done without seeing a doctor (message me if you’d like help doing this). I’ll cover what I consider “essential” labwork in a future post, so at the very least you’ll know what labs to request your doctor run for you.

*One clue does not make a dis-ease or a diagnosis. #clustercluesforthewin

*How do you feel? Think this over. Do you feel great most days? If your answer hovers more around the “meh” answer, here’s where you’ll want to start. There are many many posts within this group that addresses supportive measures for most of these topics:
👉Do you get enough sleep?
👉Do you exercise vigorously and regularly?
👉Do you know your recent blood pressure and blood sugar numbers?
👉Do you have a “healthy” bowel movement daily?
👉Do you eat in a healthy manner?
👉Do you have a close set of friends, participate in life fully, attend church?
👉Do you laugh often and enjoy life?
👉Do you avoid vices? (smoking and regular alcohol consumption especially)

*Consider keeping a health journal. Write down your clues as you find them. This will be very helpful to you as you learn how to be a better CEO of Y.O.U Incorporated in 2021, and will also help you decide which supplements or oils might need to be on your monthly “must haves” for 2021.

*Know your limits. If you have found several clues pointing to a significant health issue, please contact your preferred health professional. Naturopaths, Integrative medicine doctors, and functional medicine doctors are my personal first choice as they tend to look beyond the symptoms and address the root cause.

Last week I read several comments when discussing less than prominent lunula….. Fewer than 8 prominent lunula may be an indication of low cellular oxygen, poor circulation, a chronically weakened immune system, a possible thyroid disorder, or a Vitamin B12 Deficiency. Lots of possibilities, right? If you didn’t know where to start (since this is a first clue), what daily Young Living supplement may be supportive of most of these conditions? (Hint: It’s red ).

For the Love of Books! And Freedom!

Liz James · November 27, 2020 ·

Up is down, right is wrong…when will it end? As an avid bibliophile📚 and believer in our Constitutional rights🇺🇸, this simultaneously breaks my heart and inflames it.
I read To Kill a Mockingbird, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Of Mice and Men, The Cay, and Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry all when I was younger. They made an impact on me… each one a little differently… but ALL of them adding to lessons in empathy and history as it related to the times they were written in. If we don’t learn from our collective history we are destined to repeat it (Winston Churchill)
I saw a picture a few months back of a school  dumpster full of books. (… I can’t even😭😭)…. they were there because of cancel culture.
And then we have this example of “digital book burning” for the opposite reason. Investigative author Abigail Shrier had a nearly impossible time getting her book (based upon nearly 200 interviews of gender dysphoria experts, parents of girls who have transitioned, and girls themselves) published, reviewed, or even on a platform to be sold to the public because its contents goes against the current social narrative (despite the truth of the contents within the pages).
I’m reading our weekly paper (Epoch Times… the BEST most accurate and reliable news source I’ve found) and found these two articles in the same issue.
We are at a tipping point in our beautiful country. We who love it and who have conservative God fearing values are also known for quietly “going along to get along”. Friends,  we will all be held accountable for our actions here on earth, but we will also be held accountable for standing silently and allowing travesty to happen on our watch.
I stand for truth and freedom and loving one another. I stand against cancel culture…… do you?

Why Vitamin B Matters

Liz James · October 13, 2020 ·

Did you know….. a deficiency in B vitamins has been linked to mood changes and depression. Vit B’s are key ingredients when it comes to the body’s ability to make mood enhancing chemicals (you may know them as serotonin, dopamine, and epinephrine😉). If your diet is lacking,  both physical and mental health may be affected.
If the upcoming winter months tend to be an emotionally darker time of year for you, make sure you are giving your body the tools it needs to keep your light bright and shining!😘

Power to Heal – part 3

Liz James · September 19, 2020 ·

Part III: The power of the mind!
Early in my pharmacy career👩‍⚕️, I filled a prescription written by an older doctor. I was a young pharmacist, and incredulous at what I was about to fill…… sugar pills. No, they weren’t pills for diabetes. These were flat out simple white pills made of pressed sugar and probably some other inert ingredients. My older co-worker pharmacist told me this particular patient had been getting them for years to help with her anxiety. Oh really?  I thought…. This gal must be crazy. (again, the young naive pharmacist waving her newbie flag). Turns out, she wasn’t crazy, and the doctor was brilliant.
The “placebo effect” isn’t a new thing. In fact, it’s been around since Methuselah. The mind is a powerful tool…. More effective than we give it credit for. Hundreds (if not thousands!) of studies confirm that our body responds to what we believe and what we tell ourselves…. Regardless if it’s that quiet mind chatter or if we outright talk to ourselves out loud…. our beliefs and our words (spoken or not) shape emotional and sensory perceptions. We truly ARE what we think we are.
Western medicine acknowledges this as a fact, but rarely utilizes it as a way to jump start the healing process. Migraines, pain, arthritis, asthma, allergies, ADHD,  high blood pressure, IBS,  and depression are just a few dis-eases that have been shown to be responsive  to the placebo effect.
Placebo’s aren’t just in pill form either. A 2014 study in Oxford University looked at 53 trials that compared surgical intervention to placebo. In 74% (39 out of 53) of the trials, there was improvement in the placebo surgery.
The placebo effect works in multiple ways. In addition to the psychological aspect of “we are what we think we are”, “believing” also plays an active role within certain neurotransmitter functions…. Including the dopamine, opioid, serotonin, and endocannabinoid (think CBD) systems. In essence, merely believing that you will feel better activates the body into helping you do just that.
Our bodies WANT to heal, and perhaps our minds have just not been taught how to participate!
So if a certain degree of healing can occur simply by teaching someone how to use their own tools available to them (the power of self “prescribed” positive vibes….ie: the physics and biology of frequency!!),  why aren’t more western medicine doctors AND insurance companies educating their patients about this?   Certainly proper eating habits, hydration, and exercise should be added to this list as well. #chalkituptoprofit
The sad truth is this….. because we are an “insta” country, positivity, slow food, and exercise don’t generally fall into the “insta” bucket of western medicine. Positivity is cultivated by close friendships and/or family with a healthy portion of gratitude and kindness, and dare I say it… a faith that produces peace that passes all understanding.  It is a learned character trait that ANYONE can master should they desire to do so.
Western medicine should be our safety net, not a quick fix.
Mind over matter… matters.
👉What’s next? Part IV…. Body, how do you heal thyself? 👈
Xoxo~ liz
