Fighting for Access to Directed Donor Blood: Why SB125 Matters

Liz James · July 25, 2025 ·

Bob Hall and girls who fought for blood donations

Blessed By His Blood

“Special Blood” = Life
Thank you Texas State @SenatorBobHall, for authoring SB125 in Texas’ 89th Legislative session.
Meili and her sister have a rare blood disorder which requires monthly blood transfusions for them to be healthy. Early in their lives, their hematologist told their parents that the children would have a much better chance of thriving if they received directed donor blood. Their parents reached out to their community, and found kind committed donors who rotationally give blood to the girls. They have had the same set of donors for over 10 years. In 2023, the blood bank quietly began denying doctor’s written orders for directed donor blood, not just for these girls, but for every directed donor order written. In the summer of 2023, both girls got really sick from receiving blood from the anonymous blood pool (a fact that was not even acknowledged by the blood bank representatives during the bill hearings). The girl’s parents were finally able to find a different transfusion center that is serviced by a different blood bank who were willing to work with them, but they live with the fear of knowing that their access to “special blood” could be turned off at any time.
Directed donor blood generally tends to be fresher than anonymous donor blood. As blood ages in a bag, there is an increased risk of transfusion related injury, including death, blood clots, multi-organ dysfunction, increased hospital stay time, and decreased oxygen carrying capacity. Additionally, not all blood is equal in terms of quality. For example, the blood of a healthy 20-year-old athlete would be superior to a 50-year-old blood donor who eats a Standard American Diet and is on the typical average of 2-4 medications.

“What’s Really in That Shot? Why Informed Consent Matters in the Age of Biologics”

Liz James · March 25, 2025 ·

A question we ask on our www.blessedbyhisblood.com membership questionnaire is this:

Have you used or been given an injectable product since 2020?

There is far more to the world of pharma than just synthetically derived drugs. The new-ish (and rapidly growing) class of medications known as biologics often contains cells or products derived from various animal forms—including humans.

(Side note: Did you know the vast majority of donated blood products collected in the U.S. are sold overseas to big pharma and research companies? And we wonder why they say there’s a blood shortage in local communities… 🙄)

More and more people are waking up to this, but the vast majority still assume that whatever is being given to them by the medical establishment is safe—and that someone else has done a proper risk assessment on their behalf.

If you believe you have the right to choose what does and does not go into your body, it behooves you to understandwhat a product actually is… and what you might unintentionally be doing to your body.

We frequently get questions from mamas wondering what to do when their doctor tells them they need a RhoGAM shot. My friend Alexandra (author of the amazing book Well Considered) outlines true informed consent regarding this topic—both on her website,  Just The Inserts, and in a downloadable PDF.

Only you can decide what’s best for you.

xoxo,
Liz

March Madness: Floods, Flights, and Fighting for Truth

Liz James · March 15, 2025 ·

My Spring schedule is definitely on “in like a lion status”🦁😂🌬. In the last 20 days, my office was massively flooded by a broken fire sprinkler system pipe (its a mess, over 100K in damages/cleanup, but i am so grateful for the amazing people/companies who have been helping🙏🙏), I traveled thru 5 states, taught saw and enjoyed the company of a beautiful farming community in Ohio (still need to post pictures on that trip), came home, changed suitcases, ran to Austin to speak as invited testimony in a Senate hearing regarding SB125 which will protect and preserve the right to directed donor blood (THANK YOU Senator Bob Hall for your fierce protection of your bill!!❤️🫶🙌, and to Senator Angela Paxton for co sponsoring it!), met with about 15 other Representatives and Senators later in the day, secured two House Bill sponsors (God bless you Reps Olcott and Shofner🙌🙏🙌❤️🙌), drove home (well, actually, I didn’t drive…. my most precious prayer warrior friend Robin volunteered to help in any way she could, and driving was just one of the many things she did to help❤️), got home about midnight, had a 7am ZOOM call with about 30 Legislators from all over the USA who are interested in creating Legislation like Senator Hall’s Bill, submitted an invited testimony on behalf of a Bill modeled after Senator Hall’s Bill in Rhode Island, had 3 Good Medicine client appts yesterday afternoon, and then went to bed.🥱.
All this to say….. I apologize if I have not returned a call or been slow to respond to emails for the last few weeks. 😬
Have a beautiful Friday!
I’m off to represent www.blessedbyhisblood.com at the National Health Federation conference this weekend. Thankfully, it’s in Dallas, so I don’t have to pack a suitcase😜…. I’m commuting (would much rather sleep in my own bed with my hubby and cats❤️! )
(Those of you who know me well know that I’m an introvert and our farm is my happy place. God is stretching and growing me in ways I would have never imagined. My Bible verses [Psalm 119] today were interesting, especially in light of His call to protect the blood on a legislative level, and to bring light to the broken blood donation industry….. it’s not actually broken…. it’s profit centered as opposed to being patient care centered. Happy to talk to anyone who wants to learn more about what I’m doing and why🙏🩸🙏. Not my will, but His. )
